Achieve
Hello 2010!
Did you set any goals or resolutions? I’m big on goals, but this year I didn’t set any new goals or resolutions, because I made a HUGE list for myself back on my birthday. This year I was inspired by a women, Ali Edwards, whose blog I follow. Ali is a designer and artist who does a lot of work in the scrap booking world, a lot of hybrid stuff. She’s big on words, and how powerful words are. For 3 years now she’s been encouraging others to pick a word that you’d like to focus on for the new year. Read here about the tradition, and why she does it. I liked the idea and leading up to the new year (new decade!), I thought about what word I’d like to focus on during the coming days, and have decided on:
ACHIEVE
to bring about an intended result; accomplish some purpose or effect (dictionary.com)
With this grand list I created back in November of goals I wanted to complete I decided that I wanted a word which would help focus my attention. I have a habit of setting a goal, but not always following through because I’ll think of something else great I want to do. This word will help me remember that I have a giant list already created to work on. I could have picked accomplish, or finish or complete… which all would serve to focus my efforts, but they all sounded so final. I want this list I created to be the stimulus not the end to setting and completing my goals in life. In the past I had a goal to be able to run a whole 5 mile race without stopping. I worked really hard at doing that and finished the race without stopping to walk or take a break. I was pretty darn proud of myself, and felt great physically…. But with the goal completed, I stopped running for a VERY long time. I don’t want that feeling of being “done” or “finished” stop me from continuing onward. To me ACHIEVE is a little more open ended. I may ACHIEVE my goal of cleaning my car every month, but that doesn’t mean I stop cleaning my car after the year is done. This goals will help me to ACHIEVE a certain state of life… and then I’ll can continue and ACHIEVE more!
Now I just need a nice little visual reminder of it… maybe a little word art or perhaps one of these !?
If you had to pick a word to focus on this year, what would it be?
Abbie- I love this post! Your thoughts really resonate with many I’ve been having as I have pondered my goals for 2010. (I will probably post something about the topic today as well.) I think the word I would put on my necklace (those are so cute, btw) would be remember. Remember my commitment to myself, remember not to let go of past progress, remember the happiness that comes from increased self mastery.
Oh and thanks for the mocktail link! It was thoughtful of you to pass it along, and I’ve filed the info away for future use!
I read this post 2 weeks ago and I’ve been thinking about it off and on ever since. I made a list and considered several words but finally settled on compassion. So for the last week now it’s been in the forefront of my mind and has influenced some of the decisions I’ve made. Very cool idea. Thanks for posting this. Also, I want to get together with you guys sometime soon. It’s been forever.
This is a fun idea. I really like Ali Edward’s stuff, too. She has a fun way with words. I like what you chose!
